In the late 1940s, immediately after the establishment of the Japanese National Railways, many wooden passenger cars were used nationwide. Due to aging and safety concerns, these were gradually replaced by steel-bodied cars. Except for first-class cars, these steel cars were used on local routes and retained features such as the same seat pitch as the old wooden cars and omission of seat upholstery.
The Ohafu 62 is a cold-weather version of the Ohafu 61, featuring double-glazed windows. Trains that operated in northern and eastern Hokkaido were often equipped with gear-driven axle generators.
