Oha 62 Passenger Car Model for Hokkaido
In the late 1940s, immediately after the establishment of the Japanese National Railways, many wooden passenger cars were used nationwide. Due to aging and safety concerns, these were replaced by steel-bodied cars. Except for first class cars, these steel-bodied cars served local routes and retained features such as the same seat pitch as the old wooden cars and the omission of seat upholstery.
The Oha 62 is the cold-weather version of the Oha 61. It was fitted with double-glazed side windows and, on services in northern and eastern Hokkaido, was often equipped with gear-driven axle generators.
