The 185 series 0 limited express was introduced in 1981 to replace the 153 series used on express and local services to the Izu area. For about six months after introduction, it ran on the Izu express, sharing the route with the 153 series.
When the express Izu was upgraded to a limited express and renamed Odoriko, the 185 series primarily served the Odoriko route. The trains were renovated in the late 1990s, including the addition of reclining seats, and they remained in service until 2021.
