The 485 series 1000, featuring an enhanced cold-weather and snow-resistant design, debuted in 1976 and operated in the Tohoku region. During the Japanese National Railways era it ran as a 12-car set that included a dining car, primarily used on the Ou Main Line for the limited express services "Tsubasa" and "Yamabato". Some sets were assigned to Aomori Depot in addition to Akita Depot and were used on limited express services on the Tohoku Main Line, mainly "Yamabiko", alongside the 0, 200, 300, and 1500 series.
