The 485-1000 series, featuring enhanced cold-weather and snow-resistant construction, debuted in 1976 and operated in the Tohoku region. During the Japanese National Railways era, it ran as a 12-car set with a dining car, primarily on the Ouu Main Line limited express services Tsubasa and Yamabato. The SARO 481-1050 cars were created by modifying SARO 481-0 series vehicles and were fitted with a sales corner and a sales preparation room, earning the nickname "Special Salo".
