The 485 series 1000, with an enhanced cold-weather and snow-resistant structure, debuted in 1976 and was mainly used in the Tohoku region. During the Japanese National Railways era it operated as a 12-car train with a dining car, primarily on the Ou Main Line limited express trains Tsubasa and Yamabato. Some cars were assigned to the Aomori Depot in addition to the Akita Depot and were used on Tohoku Main Line limited express services such as Yamabiko alongside the 0, 200, 300, and 1500 series.
