The 373 series was introduced in 1995 as a replacement for the 165 series. This train type first served the Fujikawa limited express, followed by the Tokai and Inaji services. It modernized JR Central's express fleet that had previously relied on JNR-era rolling stock and upgraded those services to limited express standards.
