The 14 series Type 14 sleeper passenger car debuted in 1971. Compared with the earlier 20 series, it provided improved passenger comfort and adopted a distributed power system designed to allow trains to split and merge, rather than relying on a single power car. The power supply unit was installed in the Suhanehu 14 car.
The Hokuriku was a limited express sleeper train that ran between Ueno and Kanazawa, serving the Hokuriku region for tourism and business. The Ueno to Nagaoka section was hauled by an EF64-1000 locomotive, and the Nagaoka to Kanazawa section was hauled by an EF81 locomotive.
The 14 series sleeper cars used on the Hokuriku later formed a 12-car train with private sleeping compartments and shower facilities. In March 1999 the formation was reduced to 8 cars, and the train remained in service until retirement in 2010.
