The series 153 was an electric train developed for semi-express and express services, mainly used on the Tokaido and Sanyo Main Lines and in the Boso area. Trains based at Tamachi Depot were primarily used on the express Izu and on local services. They were replaced by the series 185 in 1981, and during the transition both series were sometimes operated coupled together.
