The series 153 was an electric train developed for semi-express and express services, mainly used on the Tokaido and Sanyo Main Lines and in the Boso area. Sets based at Tamachi Train Depot were commonly assigned to the Izu express and also ran on local services. The series 153 was gradually replaced by the series 185 from 1981, and both types were operated coupled together during the transition.
