The E3 Series 0 model reproduces the early E3 Shinkansen appearance after conversion to a 6-car set. The E3 Series 0 models entered service on the Shinkansen in 1997. Early sets were originally 5-car formations up to the R16 set when the Akita Shinkansen opened; by December 1998 E328 cars were added to form 6-car trains. Early exterior details included a single windshield wiper on the driver cab, no cable head cutouts at the roof edges, and insulator covers at both ends of the roof on the added E328 cars.
