The 103 series, introduced in 1976 to replace older trains, became widely used on the Ome Line, Itsukaichi Line, and Musashino Line. Later deployed to replace the 101 series on the Musashino Line, the 103 series evolved with modifications such as the ATS-P safety system installation on KUMOHA cars when the Keiyo Line opened, which resulted in the train number window being covered. The Musashino Line later adopted 8-car formations to increase capacity, creating dedicated sets distinct from those on the Ome and Itsukaichi Lines.
