The 103 series, introduced in 1976 to replace older trains, was used on lines such as the Ome Line. It later replaced the 101 series on the Musashino Line and became common on the Ome Line, Itsukaichi Line, and Musashino Line. After JR privatization, high-cab ATC trains were introduced to replace the early 103 series. In later years, the high-cab ATC trains were formed as 4-car and 6-car sets for the Ome and Itsukaichi lines and as 8-car sets for the Musashino Line to meet demand. They remained in service until replaced by the 201 and 205 series.
