Sanriku Railway is a third-sector railway company that opened in 1984.
The section from Kamaishi to Miyako on the JR Yamada Line, which was damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake, was transferred to Sanriku Railway in 2019, and now it is newly integrated as a “Rias Line” with the existing “North Rias Line” and “South Rias Line”. Is being operated regularly.
Operation was suspended on all lines due to the effect of Typhoon No. 19 in October 2019, but it will be gradually restored and the whole line will be opened on March 20, 2020.
Type 36-700 is a vehicle that started operation in April 2013, and 14 cars are enrolled, including the vehicle that was added when the "Rias Line" was opened.
36-702 is a project by Smile Tohoku Project with students of Kamaishi Higashi Junior High School as part of "#Thank You From KAMAISHI" to send thanks from Kamaishi to the world.
It is active as a "Sanriku Railway Smile Train" with a design wrapping.
