From the opening of railways until the late Showa period, many two-axle freight cars were used for rail transport, varying by the type of cargo carried. During the Japan National Railways era most freight cars were two-axle types, but after yard transport was abolished many of these models disappeared.
In model railroading, two-axle freight cars are compact and offer a wide variety of looks. Numerous types have been produced in various scales since early days, and even now—long after they left service—they remain popular for adding visual variety to train consists.
Special Edition
- This set is based on the 15 types of two-axle freight cars that were in the product lineup when Tomix was founded in 1976. Some models are reproduced using molds of trains with similar shapes.
- The Tom 50000 and Sem 8000 types are reproduced using newly produced molds.
- The Tomufu 1 type is newly produced with the same overall length as the private railway Tofu cars.
- One Tam car is reproduced in silver to resemble a methanol-only car, and the other is reproduced in black to resemble a gasoline-only car. The company emblem is reproduced as a fictional design.
- The Waf 28000 type is reproduced using the mold for the Nanbu Tokaido Railway Waf 1.
- The Re 2900 and TORA 55000 types are reproduced using the Re 12000 and TORA 145000 types, which are similar in shape; only the markings are changed.
- The Wam 23000 type has no ribs on the side doors and features a single-link undercarriage.
- Car numbers and markings are printed.
- Black wheels are used.
- The Waf 28000 and TORA 55000 do not have taillights.
