The KIHA 100 diesel car was introduced in 1990 to replace the KIHA series 20 and KIHA series 45. Four prototype cars were built first, followed by four improved mass production cars (first batch) in 1991, and later a second batch with modified skirt shapes and other updates. These trains operated primarily on the Ofunato Line, Kitakami Line, Yamada Line, Kamaishi Line, and Ominato Line. They are scheduled to be replaced by the KIHA series 110 and retire from the Ofunato Line with the March 2025 timetable revision. Prototype and first generation cars are also being retired.
In 2024, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Kitakami Line, the KIHA series 100 No. 2 was reissued with a black front as a faithful reproduction of the original train and remained in service on the Kitakami Line and Ofunato Line until March 2025.
