The KIHA series 40 is a general-purpose diesel railcar that debuted in 1977. From 2003, three KIHA series 40/48 trains were restored to the Tokyo metropolitan area livery and put into service at the Hachinohe Transportation Depot.

- Flywheel-equipped motor combined with an M-13 motor for smooth operation
