Passenger trains that used to run on the Ban'etsu West Line between Aizu-Wakamatsu and Niitsu were hauled by DD51 locomotives. While these services were usually operated by units from JR Freight's Higashi-Niigata Depot, the JR East Nagaoka unit DD51-745 was also used on occasion. DD51-745 was notable for having an additional headlight added while based at the Goryokaku locomotive depot and kept its three-headlight appearance until the end of its service, even after transfer to Honshu.
