The E501 series is a commuter train that debuted in 1995 on the Joban Line for medium distance service and is designed to operate on the AC electrified section between Toride and Tsuchiura. In 2007 the E531 series became the main train, and the original E501 sets were modified with the addition of toilets and repurposed for local service on sections such as between Tsuchiura and Kusano. In 2012 the 10 car sets received equipment upgrades similar to the 5 car sets, including replacement of pantographs with single arm types and destination indicators with LED units. As of August 2026, only 10 car trains remain in service, operating limited morning and evening runs between Mito and Kusano.
