The KIHA 47 series 0-series trains were primarily designed for warmer climates in western Japan and featured two-stage sliding unit windows. JR Shikoku inherited 19 KIHA 47 series 0 cars and 13 KIHA 47 series 1000 cars from Japanese National Railways, and in 1988 all KIHA 40 series cars were modified to be equipped with air conditioning. The KIHA 47 series trains were based at the Tokushima and Matsuyama depots; Matsuyama depot trains were retired by 2016. As of July 2026, some 0-series trains remaining at the Tokushima depot operate alongside the KIHA 40 series.
