The EA-18G Growler is the U.S. Navy’s modern electronic warfare aircraft developed as the successor to the Grumman EA-6B Prowler. Based on the F/A-18F Super Hornet, the Growler entered service in 2009 and is crewed by a pilot and a weapons systems officer. It is equipped with AN/ALQ-99 tactical jamming pods, AN/ALQ-218(V)2 radio frequency receivers, and the AN/ALQ-227 communications countermeasures set. Powered by two General Electric F414-GE-400 turbofan engines, the Growler can reach speeds near Mach 1.8. VAQ-130 Zappers, the U.S. Navy’s oldest electronic attack squadron, has operated the Growler since 2011 and carries the Zapper Dragon insignia on its tail.
