Overview
Introduced in 1959, the MiG-21 is a classic Soviet fighter that remained in frontline service into the 2000s across many variants. Designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich bureau, the prototype first flew in 1955 and the MiG-21 designation was assigned in 1956. The MiG-21bis, considered the definitive production version, first flew in 1971. It was powered by a single Tumansky R-25-300 turbojet with a top speed of about 2175 km/h. Armament included one fixed 23 mm GSh-23L cannon and four hardpoints capable of carrying up to 1300 kg of stores. The type was widely deployed across the Soviet Union and allied countries.
