The JR Shikoku 2000 series was developed to increase speeds on the Dosan Line, which features many steep curves through the Shikoku Mountains. It is the world’s first mass production tilting diesel multiple unit (the prototype was the JNR KIHA391 series) and Japan’s first vehicle equipped with a controlled tilt system. The N2000 series is an improved variant produced for the Koutoku Line. Both series have been used on major limited express services across Shikoku, though their operational range has decreased in recent years with the introduction of successor trains.
