- The JR Shikoku 2000 series was developed to increase speeds on the Dosan Line, which features many steep and winding sections through the Shikoku Mountains. It is JR Shikoku’s limited express diesel multiple unit and the world’s first mass-produced tilting diesel multiple unit (the prototype was the JNR KIHA391 series). It is also the first vehicle in Japan equipped with a controlled tilting system.
- The N2000 series is an improved version of the 2000 series, originally built for use on the Koutoku Line. Both series have been used on Shikoku’s main limited express services, though their operational range has narrowed in recent years with the introduction of successor trains.
- As of 2024, surviving cars received various updates depending on type and depot assignment, including full-color LED destination indicators, some trucks (bogies) replaced on certain cars, and LED headlight upgrades on some N2000 vehicles.
- The 2000 series is mainly used on the limited express Ashizuri (Kochi - Nakamura / Sukumo) and Uwakai (Matsuyama - Uwajima). The N2000 series is active on the Uwakai and also frequently substituted into other limited express services.
