Kato 166-1966 Jet Powered RDC NYC M-497 is an N scale foreign model based on the experimental New York Central M-497. The prototype was developed as part of high-speed rail research by modifying a Budd RDC-3 diesel railcar with streamlined cowling and roof-mounted J47-19 jet engines taken from B-36 bomber equipment.
On July 23 and 24, 1966, the M-497 made test runs and achieved 183.85 mph, about 296 km/h, setting a United States rail speed record on conventional track that remains a legendary achievement. This one-car model is a distinctive collectible and can also be enjoyed as a self-contained powered railcar on an N scale layout.
