The E233-1000 series was introduced in 2007 to replace the 209 series on the Keihin-Tohoku and Negishi Lines, assigned to Urawa Depot, now the Saitama Rolling Stock Center. Compared with the original 0 series, main differences include the front band and train number display position, and the removed portion for platform detection devices at the cab ends. Minor changes also include relocated train radio antennas and pantograph piping on the roof, installation of D-ATC equipment, and repositioned auxiliary devices to match other types at the same depot. From 2023 onward, additional work has been carried out to install antennas and update running equipment to support the wireless train control system ATACS for future one-person operation.
