In the wake of the 1929 Great Depression and the rise of automobiles and aircraft, American railroads declined through the 1930s. In 1934 the CB&Q (Chicago, Burlington and Quincy) introduced the Burlington Zephyr, later known as the Pioneer Zephyr. Named Zephyr for a light breeze, this train featured the Budd Company’s world-first stainless steel lightweight body and was the United States’ first diesel-electric train. Its demonstration run from Denver to Chicago—about 1,633 km in 13 hours 5 minutes with a top speed of 181 km/h—captured public attention and became a symbol of railroad prestige and economic recovery. The train later became known as the Pioneer Zephyr and has been restored to its original appearance and preserved at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.
