The Express Kitaguni was a night express train connecting Osaka and Niigata. Its roots trace back to 1947 when the express trains 507/508 resumed between Osaka and Aomori, linking with the Seikan ferry at Aomori and serving as a route between Kansai and Hokkaido. After the Joetsu Shinkansen opened in 1982, through passengers to Kansai declined and service north of Niigata was separated as the daytime limited express Inaho. Kitaguni operated as the night express between Osaka and Niigata. The 583 series began service on Kitaguni in 1985, and after updates and repaints continued as a regular service until March 2012. It then ran as special services during holidays and officially ended operations in January 2013.
