The Keio 5000 Series was introduced in 1963 as an 18 m, three-door commuter train for Keio Teito Electric Railway. Built to coincide with the Shinjuku station underground project and the 1,500 V power upgrade, the series modernized the railway's image, entered limited express service, and received the Laurel Prize in 1964. The fleet remained in service until 1996 after the Keio CI logo was applied in 1989.
