- The KIHA110 series entered service in 1991 as JR East’s general-purpose diesel railcar. It is known for a lightweight, lively design and distinctive color schemes that set it apart from earlier diesel cars.
- New high-output engines and updated drivetrain technology at the time contributed to improved speeds.
- Its exterior echoes the classic JNR-style look, and some units have been wrapped in nostalgic liveries that attract attention.
- In 2025, to help activate local communities along the line, a KIHA110 200 series unit (formerly 300 series) operating on the Iiyama Line in the Nagano area was repainted in the historic Akita Relay livery.
