The Gearing class is the final development of the Fletcher and Allen M. Sumner classes. Entering service from March 1945, a total of 96 ships were completed. Most ships were commissioned after the end of World War II, received modernizations and served for many years, remaining in the United States Navy into the 1970s. These ships were later widely supplied to Western navies, and the last vessel was retired in 2014.
