The Type 87 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun was adopted in 1987 and is the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force’s only self-propelled anti-aircraft system. It mounts one Oerlikon 35 mm KDA anti-aircraft gun on each side of the turret and a search and tracking radar on the upper rear of the turret for superior firing capability. Based on the hull of the Type 74 tank, it also offers high mobility suitable for accompaniment with armored units.
