The Minekaze class destroyer was Japan's first domestically designed ocean-going destroyer. Fifteen ships of this class were built between 1920 and 1922. Moving away from previous British-style designs greatly improved seaworthiness. The class also achieved a top speed of 39 knots and was armed with four 12 cm single guns and three twin 53 cm torpedo tubes, enhancing both speed and firepower. The lead ship Minekaze was completed in 1920 and served mainly on patrol and convoy escort duties during the war.
